Volunteer Invite
Invitation to the Great Taos Yarn Tagging of 2012
Hello fiber enthusiast! Have you ever wanted to yarn tag a light post? Or maybe yarn bomb a stop sign? Well here’s your chance!
Taos Craftistas is a group of fiber enthusiasts in Taos. We’re planning a large scale yarn art installation for the town during September and October 2012.
Our vision is to cover the town in yarn. How will we do this? By making squares and rectangles and temporarily sewing them over light poles, parking meters, street signs, posts outside buildings and more! Not a knitter?
If you’re interested you can knit, crochet or weave yarn tags for this project. Tags can be dropped off at Weaving Southwest or you can arrange for Twilight to pick them up. Too busy to make tags but still want to help? You can also donate yarn and needles to this project. Cheap acrylic yarn works best; it holds up to the weather and bright sun better than other yarns we’ve tested. Knitting needles of all sizes can be used for this project. You can also sign up to be part of the installation team.
You can also help by spreading the word. We’re doing online PR via

We think Taos is perfect for this type of art installation as it is part of New Mexico’s rich fiber history and of course well know for artwork. Enlisting Taos businesses will help make this art piece larger and more of the town will be included.
We plan to install the art project September 10-14th. The art would be displayed September 17th-October 12th. We would uninstall the project October 13-15th.
The yarn tags will be sewn around in a non-invasive fashion. No property will be harmed as the tags will be temporary and easily removed. Certain items cannot be covered-no post office boxes, no traffic light buttons, no covering the money part of a parking meter.
After the installation is removed volunteers will reassemble the yarn into blankets to be donated to local charities.
If you are going to create yarn tags please check the yarn dimensions document for size requirements. Place yarn ties on the vertical edges of the tags every 2” for quick assembly. After completing your tag please label it for it’s intended purpose ie bike rack tag, stop sign tag, Plaza bench tag etc.
